The Merchant Of Venice

When I found these 15 Volumes of Shakespeare's Complete Works in 1970 they were 90 years old; now they are a reverend 140 years old...and safe. They had been cleared from the Priests' Library one weekend and dumped at the adjoining primary school where I was teaching. The Head Nun was only too glad to dump then on me when I summed up the situation and requested if I could have them. I plan to donate them to the Shakespeare room at the State Library of New South Wales in Sydney as my caretaker role comes to an end.The 15 Volumes were edited by Howard Staunton and illustrated by Sir John Gilbert of the Royal Academy on a fine tissue paper and individually glued into the books. Many pages are still uncut.Show more
