Haruki Murakami's Norwegian Wood is a quiet, grief-soaked novel set in late 1960s Tokyo. Toru Watanabe, a university student, is still processing the suicide of his closest friend when he reconnects with the friend's girlfriend, Naoko. Their relationship is tender and painful, built on shared loss rather than shared future. A third person enters: Midori, alive and chaotic where Naoko is withdrawn and fragile.
Murakami writes about love and mental illness without resolving either into something clean or hopeful. The Beatles song that lends the novel its title captures the mood precisely, nostalgic, melancholic, slightly haunted. Norwegian Wood is the book that made Murakami a household name in Japan, and it reads as both deeply personal and widely felt.
A good entry point into Murakami's work, more grounded in realism than his later surrealist novels.
