The Book Thief

Markus Zusak's The Book Thief is narrated by Death, looking back on World War Two and the small life of Liesel Meminger, a girl placed with a foster family in a Munich suburb. Liesel steals books, from a bonfire, from a mayor's library, and learns to read them in the bomb shelter while the war moves closer. Words become her survival tool and her form of quiet defiance.

Zusak writes with a restrained lyricism that makes the eventual losses hit harder for being understated. The novel asks what stories do for people under pressure, how meaning-making keeps something human alive when the world turns brutal. Hans and Rosa Hubermann, Liesel's foster parents, are among the most convincingly drawn characters in modern historical fiction.
